What type of techniques are used during treatment?

Registered Massage Therapist

A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is a healthcare professional who specializes in assessing and treating a variety of physical conditions using therapeutic massage techniques. RMTs are trained to manipulate the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and skin, to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and promote overall health and well-being.

Swedish Massage
This is the most popular form of massage used in North America. Often a lotion or oil is used to reduce skin friction. The therapist combines light stroking in one direction with deep pressure in another to relax muscles. The treatment expedites blood flow to flush lactic acid, uric acid, and other waste products from the muscles. Ligaments and tendons are stretched increasing their suppleness. Nerves are stimulated and relaxed, and stress is alleviated. The overall goal is to relax muscles.

Deep Tissue Massage
This technique targets chronic muscle tension. The therapist’s strokes are slower, using more direct pressure and friction. Depending on the texture of the deeper layers of muscle and tissue felt, the therapist periodically adjusts their hand positions, strokes, and intensity to work the tissues to release tension.

Myofascial Release
Myofascial release, or soft tissue mobilization, is a therapy used to release tension stored in the fascia. Fascia are sheets of fibrous tissue that encase and support muscles, separating them into groups and layers. Following trauma, the fascia and muscles may shorten restricting blood flow. The techniques used in myofascial release, relax muscle tension and break up fascial adhesions.

Trigger Point Release
Trigger points are tiny, tight nodules that form in muscles causing referred pain. Sometimes myofascial pain can be linked to one or more trigger points. The treatment goals include alleviating muscle spasms, improving circulation, and releasing trigger points. The therapist applies direct momentary pressure to a trigger point to cause its release. During the massage, the therapist may return several times to a stubborn trigger point to elicit its release.

How does it work?

Massage Therapy is an effective approach to pain management and rehabilitation. RMT’s are effective in treating and providing relief for a wide range of conditions such as migraine headaches, tendonitis, arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, as well as many other common conditions related to soft tissue and joint dysfunction.

Key Aspects of RMTs:

1. Education and Training:
○ RMTs typically undergo extensive training, which includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, and hands-on massage techniques. In many regions, this training takes place in an accredited program that may last several years.
○ They also learn about conditions that massage therapy can address, such as sports injuries, postural imbalances, and chronic pain conditions.

2. Certification and Regulation:
○ After completing their education, RMTs must pass a licensing examination in jurisdictions where massage therapy is a regulated profession. This examination tests their knowledge and practical skills.
○ Once licensed, they are required to maintain their registration through continuing education and adherence to a professional code of conduct.

3. Scope of Practice:
○ RMTs work with clients to develop personalized treatment plans based on individual needs and health goals. They may use techniques such as Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy.
○ RMTs often collaborate with other healthcare providers to support comprehensive patient care, especially for clients with specific medical conditions or recovery needs.

4. Work Environment:
○ RMTs can work in various settings, including private clinics, wellness centers, hospitals, sports facilities, and spas. Some also offer mobile services or work independently.

In regions like British Columbia, Canada, RMTs are recognized as primary healthcare providers, and their services may be covered by insurance plans.

How are RMT’s trained?

B.C.’s Registered Massage Therapists (RMT’s) are among the most educated and highly trained professionals in the world. To become an RMT in B.C, students must complete at least 3,000 hours of training at an accredited college. This can be compared to a university bachelor degree which typically averages 1,500 hours over four years.

Standard educational requirements include comprehensive studies in health sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology and neuro-anatomy.

Other studies include clinical sciences such as manual skills, orthopaedics, remedial exercise, hydrotherapy and patient education. The management of chronic diseases, injuries and the effects of long-term stress are also studied extensively.

What are the Benefits of Registered Massage Therapy?

Reducing or eliminating pain
Improving joint mobility
Improving circulation
Improving the function of the immune system
Increasing lymphatic drainage
Reducing depression and anxiety
Reducing tension within muscles
Increasing body awareness

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) offers a range of health benefits, both physical and
mental, through the skilled manipulation of soft tissues in the body. Here are some of the key benefits of registered massage therapy:

Physical Benefits:

1. Pain Relief: RMT can help alleviate acute and chronic pain by reducing muscle
tension, improving circulation, and promoting relaxation. It’s commonly used to treat
conditions like back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint stiffness.
2. Improved Circulation: Massage therapy enhances blood flow and lymphatic
circulation, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing
metabolic waste and toxins.
3. Muscle Relaxation: Techniques such as Swedish massage and deep tissue
massage can relax tight muscles, reduce muscle spasms, and improve flexibility and
range of motion.
4. Injury Rehabilitation: RMT aids in the recovery from injuries by promoting faster
healing of strained muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It can also prevent the
development of scar tissue and adhesions.
5. Posture Improvement: Regular massage therapy sessions can help correct postural
imbalances caused by prolonged sitting, repetitive movements, or poor ergonomic
practices.

Mental and Emotional Benefits:

1. Stress Reduction: Massage therapy promotes relaxation and triggers the release of
endorphins, which are natural mood elevators. It helps reduce anxiety, depression,
and overall stress levels.
2. Improved Sleep Quality: Many people experience improved sleep patterns after
massage therapy sessions, as it helps calm the nervous system and promotes
deeper relaxation.
3. Enhanced Mental Clarity: By reducing stress and promoting relaxation, massage
therapy can improve focus, concentration, and mental alertness.

Additional Benefits:

1. Immune System Support: Regular massage therapy sessions may boost the
immune system by reducing stress hormones and increasing the activity of immune
cells.
2. Digestive Health: Abdominal massage techniques can aid in digestion by
stimulating peristalsis and relieving gastrointestinal discomfort.
3. Overall Well-being: Massage therapy provides a holistic approach to health and
wellness by addressing both physical and mental aspects of well-being. It can
enhance quality of life and contribute to a sense of balance and harmony.

Considerations:

● Qualified Practitioners: Ensure that your massage therapist is registered and
licensed to ensure they have the proper training and adhere to professional
standards.
● Individualized Treatment: Massage therapy can be tailored to individual needs and
preferences, whether you prefer gentle relaxation or deeper therapeutic techniques.
● Consultation: If you have specific health concerns or medical conditions, consult
with your healthcare provider before starting massage therapy to ensure it is safe
and appropriate for you.

Overall, registered massage therapy offers numerous benefits beyond relaxation, making it a
valuable component of a holistic approach to health and wellness.
